We all know that search engines and other robots cannot interpret images, but images can play a crucial part in how people interpret a particular web page. Alt tags solve for this by providing text which is read by the search engines. When Googlebot or other search engine crawlers inspect a page, images with properly formatted alt text contribute to how the page is indexed and where it ranks. Alt tags are also useful for users viewing a webpage on screen readers or browsers that can't process images.
ALT text is alternative text. The purpose of ALT text is to provide Google with additional information about your image for the visually impaired who are using screen readers. Basically the screen reader will read what is being displayed on the screen. Just state what you see in your own image, but make sure to be very descriptive so people know what you’re talking about. In addition to helping the visually impaired, your alternative text helps to optimize your images for search engines. Search engines use the information you type in to understand the content of your site. Search engines such as Google can understand what type of product you’re selling, just by reading the alternative text on your image.
The alt attribute is a picture description consisting of several words, read by the crawler when page is indexed. If user has disabled the graphics support function in the browser, then the contents of the tag will be displayed instead of the picture. The text for this attribute should not be too long.
The title attribute is a description for the visitor. If the user rest the mouse cursor on the picture for a couple of seconds, title attribute will appear. Usually, to fill this tag a detailed description of 1-2 proposals is used.
DO YOU REALLY NEED THIS?
No doubt, the graphic image will load correctly even if the image tags do not have img alt and title. But in this case, the possibilities of SEO images will remain unactivated. Having spent a bit of time creating an alternative description, webmaster will be able to:
transmit the necessary data to the search engine robot
attract new visitors;
increase readers’ loyalty.
Search engines examine uniqueness of graphic images, but they are not able to analyze their thematic identity. Therefore, if a webmaster wants a robot to categorize a picture, then it should make up a text for the alt tag.
In addition to main search, Google and Yandex have a “images” service. By creating optimized descriptions image tags, webmaster increases the chances that Internet users will be able to come across his website using this service. In result, traffic growth will be ensured.
USING IT FOR SEO MANIPULATION
To attract leads to promoted requests, webmasters or store owners has to make up descriptions using key phrases for alt and title. The text created for alt tag can look like this: “adjective + key phrase”. For the title attribute, it is recommended to create complex sentence “adjective + key + addition”.
For instance, let’s take a key ” New York real estate “. For such key, you can draw a description alt “New York real estate luxury”, as well as the title “luxury real estate in Manhattan, New York.” An optimized description of image should contain such words as “photo”, “picture”.
You might be wondering, in just what way do alt attributes help SEO? Search engines use the information that alt text provides to determine the best image to return for a search query. This is a great way to both bring new visitors to your site and increase your rankings with search engines. In the process, you will give yourself an SEO edge over your competitors. That said, make sure that your attributes are actually appropriate for the image. For example, you wouldn't want to label an image of a dog with the alt text “affordable digital marketing services in Sioux Falls” — this just doesn't make sense. If you try to trick search engines like this, you could actually damage your SEO. So be true to your images!
WAYS TO CREATE EFFECTIVE ALT ATTRIBUTES
Rather than merely providing a label for an image, the alt tag should convey the same contextual information that a visual user would see if the image displayed.

Utilize keywords to help your site rank better in search: Include the keyword you want to rank for, but don't just stuff the alt text with keywords — that could end up hurting, not helping, your SEO.
